Things to Know About Social Security Payment Schedule

Keeping track of the dates and changes in Social Security payment schedules can be a hassle. But it is crucial for retirees, other eligible individuals, and their beneficiaries to do so as they are entitled to these benefits and payments. These payments usually make up a major portion of their primary income after retiring. It is important to stay informed about updates or changes in the Social Security system to ensure a stable financial future.

Social Security payments
As part of the Social Security program, officially called the Old Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance (OASDI) program, all qualified workers and their dependents can receive payments.

Things to Know About Social Security Payment Schedule
To be eligible for these benefits, individuals must contribute to Social Security through Social Security taxes. The amount that the individual or their beneficiaries receive depends on the amount they have contributed to the program. For the convenience of retired individuals, the Social Security Administration’s official website provides a Social Security pay chart. This chart shows the amount of payment and benefits retired individuals are entitled to based on their age. To track the amount of Social Security payment one will receive, one can simply visit the website and look for this chart in the “Retirements” section under the “Benefits” tab.

SSI payments
Social Security payments are different from Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments, even though both are provided by the same body (SSA). SSI payments are made to individuals who are unable to earn sufficient income by themselves. While Social Security payments require work credits, SSI payments do not.

Social Security payment schedule
The Social Security program has a fixed set of dates when eligible individuals can receive their Social Security benefits or payments. The program currently has two different payment schedules for different groups of eligible beneficiaries.

The third of each month
Social Security payments are usually issued on the third of each month for individuals who signed up for SSA benefits before 1997. Besides them, there are some other individuals who are also eligible to receive the payments on the third of each month.

  • Individuals living outside the country
  • Individuals eligible for both SSI and Social Security benefits
  • If the state pays the Medicare premiums of the beneficiaries, they will receive their SSA payment on the third of each month.

One of three Wednesdays
The Social Security payment schedule is different for beneficiaries who started receiving Social Security benefits after May 1997. These payments are distributed to them either on the second, third, or fourth Wednesday of each month. Which of these Wednesdays the beneficiaries receive their payments is based on their date of birth.

  • Beneficiaries born between the 1st and 10th day of the month receive their Social Security payment on the second Wednesday of every month.
  • Beneficiaries born between the 11th and 20th day of the month receive their Social Security payment on the third Wednesday of every month.
  • Beneficiaries born between the 21st and 31st day of the month receive their Social Security payment on the fourth Wednesday of every month.

So, for instance, if an individual was born on March 17th, they will be eligible to receive their Social Security payment on the third Wednesday of each month.

This payment schedule for Social Security benefits is the same for all eligible beneficiaries, including retired individuals, people with disabilities, and survivors.

SSI payment schedule
These payments do not follow the same schedule as other Social Security payments. SSI payments are made on the first day of each month. But if a month begins on a weekend, the beneficiaries receive their SSI payments on the last working day of the previous month.

Date and schedule of Social Security payments in 2024
For 2024, the SSI and SSA payments will follow the same schedule. If one finds it difficult to keep track of their Social Security payment dates, one can refer to the payment chart. There are several credible websites that provide a Social Security pay chart, displaying all the dates of this year when the payments will be distributed. For instance, for the month of June, individuals eligible to receive the SSA payment on the second Wednesday of the month will receive their benefits on June 12th, whereas those eligible to receive their payments on the fourth Wednesday will receive them on June 26th. But it is important to note that those eligible to receive their payment on the third Wednesday will receive it on Tuesday, June 18th, as the 19th is a federal holiday in the country.

Social Security Stimulus Payment 2024
SSA’s stimulus payment refers to the one-time payment made by the government to eligible individuals with specific impairments. In addition to them, seniors and individuals with low incomes are also eligible for receiving this payment. For this year, the government announced that it would give a stimulus check of $2000 in June 2024.
